IWT Bremen (Part 1): From the New Primary Forming Method Spray Forming in the Division of Process and Chemical Engineering to Application and Processing in the Division of Manufacturing Technologies

Field Trip

Brigitte Clausen, Lydia Achelis, Isabell Harder

IWT

Mi 21.8. 14.30-15.45 Uhr

We at the IWT develop the technologies that will be used in future metalworking. We are committed to putting our comprehensive know how and our broad range of technical equipment at your service, with the aim of solving your particular metalworking problems. The IWT emerged from the former Institute of Hardening Technology in Bremen and is an institution with a rich research tradition of more than 50 years. The overall objective of the IWT is to carry out multidisciplinary basic and applied research in metalworking. The IWT is the only research centre in Germany that has united the three disciplines materials science, process engineering and manufacturing technologies as equal-ranking divisions working together under one roof.
We offer an appr. 1.5 h lab tour on the tracks of spray forming. We will start at the spray form plants and will show some of the special materials producible with this forming method. Further on the research activities of the division manufacturing technologies will be explained using the example of spray formed materials. More information on www.iwt-bremen.de.

Guided Tour through BIBA - Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik

Field Trip

Jannicke Baalsrud-Hauge

Bremen

Mi 21.8. 16.00-17.30 Uhr

The BIBA - Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik GmbH is an independent research institute with a strong connection to University of Bremen. Many researchers are teaching at the University of Bremen and we have several common activities like the LogDynamicLab. The main research field is production and logistics. Most of our research activities deal with how to use ICT for improving the production planning, operation and control, as well as the corresponding logistic processes in order to support distributed production. BIBA is heavily involved in applied research but also carrying out fundamental research. During the visit in BIBA we will show you several of the applications we are working on, like the Intelligent Container, intelligent solutions for stock-in and stock-out in the automotive industry, as well as other applications. We will also visit our two labs: in the LogDynamicsLab we will look at how different technologies like RFID; sensors and actuators etc. can be used in logistics operation, and secondly we will visit our GamingLab in which we offer several serious games aiming at improving the knowledge and skills both on ICT for logistics and production operations, as well as for improving decision making skills in supply chains. You will have the possibility to try some of the games. More information on www.biba.uni-bremen.de.

The Bremen Drop Tower - Space Technology on Earth

Field Trip

Yvonne Reichel

Bremen

Mi 4.9. 14.45-16.00 Uhr

The Bremen Drop Tower is a ground-based laboratory for short-term microgravity experiments. It is a unique facility in Europe that attracts scientists from all over the world. In comparison to orbital systems it represents an economic alternative with permanent access. Since its inauguration in September 1990 the concrete shaft of a height of 146 m has become the landmark on the Bremen University campus.
The Drop Tower serves as an important supplement to either existing or planned orbital or suborbital platforms for microgravity research. About 400 drop experiments each year have successfully been carried out since. The facility delivers 4.74 s of near weightlessness up to three times a day. In December 2004 Bremen celebrated the first shot of the catapult system, which achieves to double the microgravity time by conducting a vertical parabolic flight. This construction has been developed at ZARM and offers world-wide unique research conditions.
A visit of the top of the drop tower is not possible on this tour!

IF-IS EXK 07

The research group Digital Media in Education (dimeb)

Field Trip

Michael Lund

Uni Bremen

Mi 4.9. 14.45-16.00 Uhr

The dimeb team comprises people from diverse backgrounds. The main activities are to develop technologies, to design learning environments, to analyse processes of learning through empirical research, and to conceptualize new paradigms for learning in a digital culture. We share a common understanding of digital media as computer-based, interactive media. Our interest is to open the experience of personal efficacy and understanding of societal changes through hands-on participation in the design of technologies. In the course of designing digital media, we place a high value on concepts that allow for sensual experience and immersion on the one hand, and evoke reflection on the other (Design for Reflexive Experience). We understand media competence as a category encompassing both life and work environments.

Always Keep It Rolling - A Look Behind the Curtain of the Robot Soccer World Champion B-Human

Field Trip

Judith Müller

Uni Bremen

Mi 4.9. 16.15-17.30 Uhr

Experience the four-time world and five-time German robot soccer champion team B-Human at practice. Methods taken from the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics allow the bipedal robots to autonomously play soccer against each other. Some of the techniques that are used to successfully play robot soccer are also applied to the grasp control of our GRASPY project which enables a robot to grasp objects such as coffee mugs.
B-Human is composed of scientists and students of the University of Bremen and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence.

Field Trip

Marcus Ermler

Uni Bremen

Mi 4.9. 16.15-17.30 Uhr

The working group "Theoretical Computer Science" headed by Prof. Dr Hans-Jörg Kreowski consists of three women and three men. Our work deals with formal methods in modelling and we apply them to picture generation, swarm intelligence, logistics, model transformation, and computer-aided verification. In the context of the excursion, we would like to present our working group as well as our research and teaching.
