The choice of a material usually depends on its macroscopic properties whereas the origin can be observed on the nano scale dimension. In this course, a detailed discussion of materials properties spanning from single molecules analysis up to macroscopic measurements will take place.

Energy and material efficiency is a topic of concern in production processes. This is due to the high energy costs and the shortage of some raw materials, the so-called critical raw materials. At the end of life of a product life cycle there is no longer dumping or incineration. There is a strong attempt to recover most of the valuable materials. By characterising the materials they are assessed for their potential of replacing primary raw materials as secondary raw materials. Various aspects of material flow management are discussed in this course. At the end of the course we are visiting a recycling plant in Bremen.

Material flows that are entering and leaving the process are often displayed in production and recycling flow sheets. It is necessary to identify the pure material flows and compounds.
The course will discuss the material flows and their characteristics in processes. How are they visualized and what does it mean? We are going to use the freeware STAN that is developed and tought at TU Wien, Austria.
